Washington-Slagbaai National Park is located in the northwestern part of Bonaire Island, covers an area of 5.6 hectares. The park was created in 1969 and is the first natural park in the Netherlands Antilles. A variety of landscapes and biotopes create unique ecosystems in the park: sand dunes, beaches, mangroves, salt marshes and a “dry” forest, in the territory of which cacti and thorny shrubs grow. Picturesque hills are replaced by tropical forests with many exotic birds. The beaches of the park are a nesting place for all four species of sea turtles living in the Caribbean. The most beautiful park at the end of the dry season - the beginning of the rainy season. At this time, nature "wakes up", and after the first tropical rainfall, a virtually lifeless plain is covered with lush greenery and many bright exotic flowers. The kingdom of Flora is represented by 340 species of plants, among which there are Divi-divi trees, Krasilnoe and Kalebasovoe, many cacti and shrubs. The fauna of the park is diverse and unique. Lizards live here, including several species that are found only in the Netherlands Antilles, snakes, iguanas, bats, 203 bird species. Caribbean flamingos are considered a “trademark” of Bonaire Island. Thousands of tourists come to see these magnificent birds in a natural habitat. Another representative of the birds is the Yellow-shouldered parrot, which is on the verge of extinction due to its popularity as a pet and, as a result, poaching of these birds. Two tourist routes were organized for visitors to the park - a short one (28 km, designed for a two-hour journey) and a long one (45 km, designed for a four-hour journey). In the center of the park is the highest hill of Brandaris Island, from the top of which a breathtaking view of Bonaire opens, and in clear weather you can see the island of Curacao and the coast of Venezuela. Visitors to the park have the opportunity to visit the beaches of the park, do underwater fishing and diving.
