Christoffel National Park is located in the northwest of the island of Curacao. Christoffel Natural Park is the largest National Park in Curacao, founded in 1978, and already in 1979 it was visited by about 16,000 people. The rich diversity of local flora and fauna, beautiful views and scenic hiking routes have made Christoffel Park one of the main attractions of the island. This conservation area is known for its large white-tailed deer population, numbering approximately 250 individuals. In the park you can find iguanas and other reptiles, more than 168 species of birds, some of which are endangered. Sea turtles nest in the coastal zone of the park. The flora is represented by a wide variety of cacti and succulents, wild orchids and plants of the Bromiliaceae family. During the rainy season, exotic flowers of all colors and shapes bloom in the park. Here there is a divi-divi tree, which, due to the eastern winds constantly blowing on the island, grows almost horizontally and is a kind of compass pointing to the western direction. And the manzania tree (a plant with rough dark bark and small green leaves) should be avoided; its fruits and juices are so poisonous that even touching the manzania bark can cause acute poisoning. The park has 8 hiking trails, including a walk through a former plantation, a hike through white-tailed deer habitat, and a climb to the top of Mount Christoffel. Motorists can also choose one of the park's routes or go on a safari through difficult terrain. Particularly popular among tourists are excursions to the limestone caves of Curacao and the ruins of the Zevenbergen plantation. The park has picnic areas, camping and recreation areas, professional guides, and interesting excursions.
