The Curacao Distillery is located in the old Chobolobo Manor, built at the beginning of the 19th century on a plot of 10,500 square meters. In 1947, the estate was acquired by Senior & Co, which has been manufacturing the famous Genuine Curacao liqueur since 1896. After the discovery of the island by the Spaniards, seedlings of oranges of the Valencia variety were brought to Curacao, which in Spain were famous for their juicy and sweet fruits. However, due to the hot and arid climate, oranges on Curacao grew bitter and inedible. The project for growing oranges was abandoned, and the citrus orchards went wild and turned into wild plantings. It was accidentally discovered that the zest of these oranges, dried in the sun, gives off essential oils with an unusual aroma. The descendant of the Valencia variety was named Golden Curacao Orange (in the local language, Laraha). The unique recipe for Curacao liquor belongs to the Senior family, which, after several experiments, launched the mass production of this drink. Now Curacao liqueur is produced in several versions - transparent, blue, red, orange and green, as well as with the addition of natural flavors of coffee, chocolate and rum raisins. Visitors to the Curacao Distillery can watch the liquor production process, see how the “Curacao drink” is bottled, taste and buy several bottles of Genuine Curacao.
