Bosque Nuboso Monteverde Biological Reserve (Monteverde Tropical Rainforest) is located in Costa Rica, in the province of Puntarenas, on the foothills of the Cordillera de Tilaran. Bosque Nuboso Monteverde is a private reserve, created in 1972 at the initiative of the inhabitants of the village of Monteverde, who gave about a third of their land for its construction. With the help of the Nature Conservation Fund and the World Wildlife Fund, enthusiasts were able to buy another 328 hectares, today the territory of the tropical rainforest, which is part of the reserve, is 10,500 hectares. The reserve is managed by the Tropical Science Center. The protected area covers eight natural zones, stretching from the peaks and ridges of the continental watershed in Monteverde (1850 meters above sea level) to the watershed of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean (700 meters above sea level). In Monteverde, 3,021 species of plants grow, including 755 species of trees, 500 species of orchids and 200 species of ferns, many of which are endemic to Costa Rica. About 130 species of mammals live in the reserve, including six species of the cat family, 400 species of birds, 1200 species of amphibians and reptiles, and a variety of insects. High humidity and high air temperatures create favorable conditions for the life of the plant and animal life in Monteverde. For visitors, more than 13 km of tourist routes are equipped, the observation deck of La Ventana, which offers panoramic views of the Monteverde watershed area. Tourists can go on their own or with a guide. Visitors to the reserve can enjoy exciting excursions, bird watching, night tours of the tropics, places to relax, a restaurant and La Casona guest house (shared and private rooms).
