Palo Verde National Park is located in the northwest of Costa Rica, in the Bagakes canton of the province of Guanacaste. The park covers an area of 19800 hectares of forest and wetlands located between the Tempisk and Bebedero rivers. Palo Verde National Park was created in 1990 with the aim of protecting forests and the vast swampy area, which is a stopping place for migratory birds, from January to February there is the highest concentration of birds in Central America. Bird Island, located in the middle of the Tempisk River, is home to many species of birds; black crowned night heron, white ibis, great crax, storks, toucans, red macaw and other exotic birds nest here. In total, more than 280 species of birds can be found in the park. Crocodiles have chosen swamps and rivers of the park, five-meter specimens are found. In the northeastern part of the park there is an array of deciduous and evergreen dry tropical rainforests inhabited by 150 species of mammals (white-tailed deer, skunks, monkeys, coyotes, agoutis). Among reptiles and amphibians in the park you can find iguanas, lizards, snakes, including common boa constrictor and poisonous rattlesnake, several species of tree frogs. Flora is no less diverse; bitter cedar, guaiac tree or tree of life, mangroves, creepers, shrubs, and many exotic flowers grow in the park. For lovers of eco-tourism, the park has developed walking and water routes, equipped places for recreation and camping.
