Plaza de la Culture
Costa Rica, San Jose (city)

Plaza de la Culture is located in the center of the capital of Costa Rica, the city of San Jose. Until 1977, there was a city park in its place, in which the townspeople liked to relax, street vendors worked and shoe cleaners offered their services. In 1973, after the National Theater of Costa Rica was given the status of a monument of cultural and architectural significance, the idea came up of building the Plaza de la Culture next to it. Young architects Jorge Berto, Jorge Bourbon and Vargas Edgar undertook to realize the project. In addition to the square, it was decided to build the Museum of Gold of the Pre-Columbian era (Museo de Oro Precolombino), all three floors of which are underground. Thus, in the center of San Jose, it was supposed to create a modern center of recreation and cultural leisure. Financing of the work was undertaken by the Central Bank of Costa Rica. Construction began in 1977, and the grand opening took place on February 26, 1982. An open space measuring 40 x 80 meters with a fountain, a multi-level terrace and green lawns has become a favorite vacation spot for residents and guests of the capital. On the square are the National Theater, the Central Bank of Costa Rica, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, the Numismatics Museum, the Grand Hotel Costa Rica, restaurants, cafes and shops. Here lovers meet, families with children relax, young people have fun, old people discuss the news, festivals, concerts, theatrical performances and exhibitions are held.
