National Park Braulio Carrillo
Costa Rica, Tortuguero

Braulio Carrillo National Park is located in Costa Rica, in the northeastern part of the Central Valley, part of the Central Volcanic Range Reserve. The park covers an area of 47,586 hectares, is located at an altitude of 36 to 2906 meters above sea level and is one of the largest natural parks in Costa Rica. Created in 1978 with the aim of protecting the biotopes of tropical primary forests and Barva volcano. The landscape of the park consists of rocky mountains densely covered with forests, with many rivers and waterfalls, rolling hills and the habitat of an extinct volcano. Most of the park is covered by primary tropical forests, in which about 6000 plant species grow, accounting for 50% of the total number of representatives of the Flora of the country. There are mahogany, endangered Manu tree, white oak, ferns, exotic orchids, plants of the Bromeliad family. More than 500 species of birds live in the Braulio Carrillo National Park (quetzal is a sacred bird of the ancient inhabitants of Costa Rica, buzzards, toucans, parrots, carduelis, hawks, vultures, bird-bell), 135 species of mammals (howler monkey, white-faced capuchin, tapirs, jaguars and cougars, bakers, agoutis and coyotes), as well as reptiles, amphibians and insects. Tourist routes have been developed for visitors to the park, one of the most popular destinations is the sector of Barva volcano. In this area there are volcanic lakes Laguna Barva with a diameter of 70 meters and a depth of about 8.6 meters, Laguna Copey with a diameter of 40 meters. The water in these reservoirs warms up to 11 degrees Celsius. In the rainforest growing on the slopes of the volcano, rare species of birds Quetzal and Campan are found. The Cuebrada González sector is located at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and has a very humid climate. The Sucio River (Dirty River) flows in this area, the waters of which are yellow-brown due to the high content of minerals of volcanic origin. The park offers visitors more than 10 km of hiking trails, observation platforms, a cable car, experienced guides, places for recreation and camping.
