Poas Volcano National Park is located in Costa Rica, in the province of Alajuela, 67 km from the city of San Jose. The park was founded in 1971, covers an area of 6506 hectares. The main attraction of the park is the active stratovolcano Poas. Its height is 2708 meters above sea level, the diameter of the main crater is 1320 meters, the depth is 300 meters. Volcano activity has been known since 1747, the last major eruptions occurred in 1910, 1952 and 1954, since 1989, scientists have recorded increased activity of the volcano, accompanied by emissions of gases and steam from fumaroles located inside the crater. The crater is filled with water containing a large amount of sulfuric acid, and constant gas emissions have caused frequent acid rain in the area. In addition to the active crater, the volcano has several extinct, in one of them, located on the southern slope, Lake Laguna Botos was formed. The water in it, due to its high acidity, has a jade color, there is no animal and plant life in the lake itself, but along the banks overgrown with rainforest there are a large number of exotic birds - hummingbirds, quetzal, toucans, parrots, tanager and others (total about 79 species of birds). On the territory of the National Park, four natural areas can be distinguished - tropical, cloudy, squat and tropical humid forests. Tropical rainforest grows on the slopes from the Caribbean Sea, tropical grows on the shores of the Botos Lagoon, and in the immediate vicinity of the crater, due to increased acidity and constant steam emissions, there is practically no vegetation, the same plants that adapted to life under these conditions Do not grow to their usual size. Rabbits, furrow squirrel, coyotes, weasels, skunks, ground squirrels, porcupines live in the rainforests of the park. Poas Volcano National Park is one of the most visited in Costa Rica, about 200,000 tourists arrive annually to see the active volcano crater and Lake Botos. Fascinating tourist routes are organized for visitors, an observation deck near the main crater is equipped, and sightseeing tours are conducted.
