Las Baulas National Marine Park is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste, in the bay of Tamarindo. The park was created in 1991 in order to protect one of the largest colonies of leathery sea turtles nesting on the beaches of the park - Playa Grande, Playa Langosta and Playa Ventanas, as well as the ecosystem of the mangrove forests of the Tamarindo wetlands. Mangrove swamps are included in the Ramsar list as having international significance. The territory of the park is 175 square kilometers, almost 90% of which is the maritime region. In addition to the endangered leatherback turtle, black sea and olive sea turtles nest in the park. Several types of ecosystems coexist on the territory of the National Park - dry deciduous, dry mixed, mountain and mangrove forests, wetlands and the sea coast with four sandy beaches. The vegetation is represented by 117 species of trees and shrubs, including strawberry, rosewood, black olive tree, laurel, mangrove trees, guanacaste, cacti, aloe. The park is home to 139 species of birds (storks, gulls, waders, white ibis, herons, hawks, hummingbirds, and others). In the forests you can find possums, coyotes, raccoons, coatis, deer, monkeys, iguanas, many species of reptiles, amphibians and insects. The magnificent white sand beaches are ideal for diving, snorkeling and surfing. However, during the nesting period of leathery sea turtles (from October to February) access to the beaches is limited and is possible only with guides licensed to conduct excursions. Hiking trails are organized in the park, boat trips, mangrove trips and bird watching are organized.
