The museum was created in 1926 and is dedicated to the 4000-year period of the pre-Columbian history of Peru, the culture of the Inca empire, as well as the ancient civilizations of Moche, Nazca and Cimu. The founder of the museum exposition is Peruvian archaeologist Rafael Larco Herrera, who owned a valuable collection of archaeological artifacts. The work of his father was continued by Rafael Larco Hoyle, who significantly expanded the collection. The museum collection was replenished with two large collections - 8,000 items (ceramics, textiles, metal products) were purchased from Carlos Roa, and 3,000 exhibits from Carrans. Larco Hoyle also acquired artifacts from the Chicam Valley, the Viru, Trujillo and Chimbote regions. The meeting has grown so much that Rafael Larco Hoyle decides to open an archaeological museum in the Chiklin family estate, naming it after his father. The museum opened its doors to visitors on July 28, 1926, on Independence Day of Peru.
