Tambopath National Wildlife Refuge

The Tambopat National Reserve is located in the southeast of Peru, in the regions of Madre de Dios and Puno. The reserve was created in 1990 with the aim of preserving the unique ecosystems and biodiversity of the tropical forests of the Tambopata River Basin. The reserve zone covers an area of 274690 hectares, on which tropical and floodplain forests, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, bamboo groves and swamps are located. In the Tambopat reserve, there are 632 species of birds (South American harpy, crested eagle, herons, goats, kingfishers, almost all types of parrots that are found in Peru, hummingbirds and many others), 103 species of mammals, including jaguar, puma, ocelot, giant river otter, tapir, bakers, two-fingered and three-fingered sloths, deer, monkeys (howlers, white-faced capuchin, tamarines, monkeys). Biologists have also identified 169 species of reptiles, 103 species of amphibians, 180 species of fish, and a huge number of species of insects, including 1200 species of butterflies. Flora is represented by 1255 plant species, many of which are rare and endemic. Cedar, chestnut, Brazil nut, palm trees, bamboo, orchids grow here. The reserve has several areas open to visitors. Among the most visited places by tourists is Lake Sandoval, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Madre de Dios river basin. The area of the reservoir is 127 hectares, palm groves grow on its shores, around the lake, through impassable jungles, hiking trails are laid, during the hike you can see wild animals and tropical birds. The rocky banks of the Tambopat River are covered with clay rich in mineral salts. Thousands of macaw parrots and other birds flock here every morning, making a noisy show. Birds eat clay, which enriches their body with essential salts. Ecotourism has been developed in the territory of the reserve open for visiting, fascinating walking and boat routes have been developed, guides are working, campsites, tent camps, observation platforms are equipped.
