Tanah Lot Temple
Indonesia, Kediri

Tanah Lot Temple is located in Indonesia, in the southwest of Bali, 20 km from the city of Denpasar. Tanah Lot Temple is an active Hindu temple and one of the most famous attractions of the island of Bali, which is visited annually by about a million people. The temple was built on a rock located a few meters from the coast, with a cliff land connected by a narrow isthmus, which can be passed only at low tide. According to legend, in the XVI century a temple on a rock was founded by the Hindu brahmin Dang Hyang Nirarth. The preacher of Hinduism led to the cliff divine light coming from a spring spurting from a rock. This rock, shaped like a bird, Dang Hyang Nirarth chose a place for his meditations and sermons. Quite quickly, he had a large number of students, which caused discontent among the local priest who preached monetism. Not wanting to give in to the herald of the new faith, he tried to force Dang Hyang Nirarth to leave the village. Tradition says that by the power of his faith, Dang Hyang tore the cliff from the shore and carried it to the sea. At the top of the cliff was built a temple called Tanah Lot, which means "land in the sea", in the caves at the foot of the cliff the preacher settled poisonous sea snakes, which were supposed to protect the temple from evil spirits and uninvited guests. Locals believe that the temple of Tanah Lot protects the island of Bali from hunger and epidemics, the place is considered sacred. Only believers are allowed to climb the stairs carved into the rock and enter the temple, tourists are only allowed to look into the caves. In the main building, they worship the God of the sea, in the building located in the northern part - the founder of the temple. At sunset, when the sun "sets" in the sea, the silhouette of the Tanah Lot temple clearly looms against the crimson sky, photographs with this view are the hallmark of Bali.
