Sacred Monkey Forest
Indonesia, Ubud District

The sacred Monkey Forest is located in Indonesia, on the island of Bali, in the village of Padantegal and is one of the main attractions of Ubud. The sacred forest of monkeys is a protected area of the rainforest with three ancient Hindu temples located in it. The main temple, the temple of the Dead, is located in the southwestern part of the forest, its territory is considered sacred, tourists are not allowed to enter it. Near the temple, along the walls and stairs, statues of sacred animals and warrior monkeys from the ancient Indian epic Ramayana are installed. There are many paths and paths in the forest, a deep ravine with a stream flowing along its bottom. In the very center of the thicket grows a huge banyan tree, in which it is customary to take pictures to commemorate a visit to the Sacred Monkey Forest. The plant world of the forest is rich and diverse, 115 species of trees are found in a small (about 10 hectares) area. Twilight reigns in the forest, the rays of the sun struggling to break through the dense crown of trees. Full owners and guardians of the temples are 600 long-tailed macaques living in the sacred forest. Locals and visitors to the park treat the monkeys with bananas and other goodies. However, care must be taken, as macaques can attack and even bite. In addition, “cute” monkeys strive to steal everything that is bad or shiny - phones, glasses, a wallet from the back pocket of trousers, watches and jewelry. Since monkeys are considered sacred animals, they feel completely unpunished. At the entrance to the forest there are many souvenir shops, restaurants and fruit stalls. About 15,000 tourists visit the forest every month, so monkeys are never hungry.
