The Mitchell Library is a public library in Glasgow, Scotland.
The library is named after tobacco magnate Stephen Mitchell, who died in 1874 and bequeathed nearly 70 thousand pounds to the foundation of the library in Glasgow. Opening to visit in 1877, the library was originally located in a temporary building on Ingram Street and contained about 14,000 books. Now it occupies three buildings on North Street, and its collection, having increased many times, is about 1,300,000 volumes, 35,000 maps and an archive of thousands of newspapers, microfilms and photographs. Among the treasures of the library are rare editions and ancient manuscripts, city archives (starting from the 12th century) and the world's largest collection of materials related to the life and work of the poet Robert Burns.
