The monument to the Polish Underground State and the Craiova’s Army is located in Warsaw, in front of the complex of buildings of the Polish parliament, on Sielnska Street, not far from the intersection with Jan Matejko Street. The design of the monument was presented at two competitions, which were held by the Association of Polish Architects in 1993 and 1997. The project of the architect Jerzy Staniskis was chosen. The monument has the shape of an obelisk 32 meters high, lined with Italian granite slabs of light gray color, in the form of stylized letters AK. The grand opening of the monument took place on June 10, 1999 in the presence of the Speaker of the Polish Sejm Maciej Plazzynski. On this day, the Polish Cardinal Jozef Glempa celebrated Mass, and the next day, June 11, 1999, the monument was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The monument to the Polish Underground State and the Home Army is a tribute to all veterans of the Home Army, is also a symbol of Polish statehood. The anniversary celebrations mark the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising during World War II and the independence of Poland.
