Karen Blixen Museum
Kenya, Nairobi

The Karen Blixen Museum is located in Kenya, 20 km from the center of Nairobi, in the suburbs of Karen, at the foot of the Ngong Hill, is a farmhouse owned by the famous Danish writer Karen Blixen and her husband, the Swedish baron Bror Frederick von Blixen-Fenecke. The colonial-style house was built in 1912 by the Swedish architect Oke Söhren. In 1917, the Blixen couple acquired a land area of 4,500 acres with a house and began to grow coffee. The writer lived on a farm in 1917-1931. In 1921, the couple broke up, and Karen Blixen continued to live on the farm alone, sometimes visiting relatives in Denmark. Farm workers idolized their mistress, Karen worked with them, acted as an arbiter in disputes, took part in heart affairs and constantly studied with them. It was in Africa that the writer met Dennis Finch Hatton - a traveler, hunter, pilot and natural scientist, who became the only and true love of Karen Blixen. Happiness Karen “collapsed” in 1931 - Dennis Hatton crashed during the flight (his grave is at the foot of the Ngong hill), a little later the fire destroyed most of the coffee plantation. The farm fell into decay, and the writer did not have the desire and strength to start everything from scratch. In 1931, Karen Blixen sells the farm and leaves Africa forever. The writer described her memories of the years spent in Kenya in the book Farewell to Africa, which became world famous and became a bestseller. After her departure, the African house Karen Blixen was replaced by several owners, in 1964 was purchased by the Danish government and donated to Kenya. After the movie “From Africa,” based on the book by Karen Blixen, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford on world screens in 1985, interest in Karen Blixen’s legacy has grown enormously, and the government of Kenya decided to create a museum in its former home writers. The museum was opened in 1986, the interior, which was under Karen Blixen, was recreated in the house. Many pieces of furniture that the writer sold on departure were redeemed and form part of the museum's exhibit. The museum stores personal belongings of the writer, photographs, books, a bookcase, commissioned by Dennis Finch Hatton. The museum also features a coffee dryer owned by Karen Blixen, a tractor and other agricultural implements. The museum has a souvenir shop where you can buy as a souvenir the products of local artisans and the book Farewell to Africa, which brought Karen Blixen world fame.
