Pilanesberg National Park
RSA, Sun City

Pilanesberg National Park is located in the Northwest Province of the Republic of South Africa, next to Sun City, a two-hour drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. The park is located in the crater of a long extinct volcano; its eruptions 1300 million years ago contributed to the creation of unique landscapes and geological structures in this territory. The landscapes of the park are beautiful and diverse - rocky cliffs, endless plains, forested ravines, flowering valleys and lakes. Pilanesberg is an oasis of wildlife with an area of 572 square kilometers. Its creation was initiated in 1979 as part of the Operation Genesis program, with the support of the South African government. Land was bought from farmers living in this territory, people were relocated, the town of Pilanesberg was demolished, animals were moved to the territory of the future park. The project to restore the Pilanesberg fauna through reintroduction (resettlement from other places of species of wild animals that had disappeared from here that previously inhabited this area) is recognized as one of the most ambitious in the world. As a result, almost all mammals living in South Africa are represented in the National Park. Pilanesberg is home to more than 7,000 animals, including 24 species of large mammals, 65 species of reptiles and more than 350 species of birds. In the park you can see lions, leopards, black and white rhinos, elephants, buffalos, brown hyena, cheetah, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and a wild African dog. The flora is not inferior in its richness and diversity - 132 species of trees and at least 68 species of herbaceous plants grow in the park. Beautiful nature, a variety of landscapes and ecosystems, as well as the proximity of the park to the ultramodern entertainment resort of Sun City attract thousands of tourists from all over the world to Pilanesberg. Visitors can go on a photo safari in jeeps or on a hiking trip, fly in a balloon, take a trip through the park on their own or accompanied by a professional guide. The park has built comfortable campsites, campsites and luxury cottages, equipped picnic areas, gazebos for photographing and bird watching. According to a survey conducted by the South African Tourism Board, Pilanesberg National Park ranked first in the list of South Africa's most popular nature parks.
