Cave de los Verdes Cave
Canary Islands, Haria

Cueva de los Verdes Cave is located in the northern part of Lanzarote, 4.5 km from Aria, in the Monumento Natural del Malpaís de La Corona Natural Park. Cueva de los Verdes was formed as a result of the eruption of the volcano Corona 5000 years ago. The stream of fiery lava burned indentations in solid rocks - below the lava it was still liquid and flowing, and the surface layers gradually solidified, forming a kind of "pipe". This formed an underground volcanic tunnel with a length of 6 km, which begins at the crater of the Corona volcano and ends on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Its width is 24 meters, its height is 15 meters, the deepest part of the cave reaches 35 meters below sea level, the elevation is 230 meters. The cave architecture is diverse and chaotic - winding corridors and straight sections, spacious halls and gorges. In the 15th century, Cueva de los Verdes was used by the indigenous inhabitants of the island - the Guanches as a shelter during the Spanish conquest. Later, the population of Lanzarote took refuge in a cave from raids by pirates and raids by slave traders. In several places, the "roof" of the tunnel collapsed, forming deep gaps, the so-called "Jameo", which provide access to the grottos of the cave. Since 1964, a part of the Cueva de los Verdes cave, 1 km long, open to tourists, is one of seven attractions managed by the Cabildo de Lanzarote Center for Art, Culture and Tourism. The multi-colored illumination of the vaults and walls of the cave was developed by the famous artist Jesus Soto. The tour lasts about an hour, visitors can walk through the multi-level galleries of the cave, interconnected vertically, see frozen lava flows, basalt blocks and bizarre salt deposits. Air flows provide natural ventilation of the cave, maintaining a constant temperature of about 19 degrees Celsius. Cueva de los Verdes is famous for its concert hall with excellent acoustics, there are concerts of classical and piano music.
