The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve located in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. Established in 1968, it protects a significant portion of the Ukrainian Carpathians, covering an area of over 57,000 hectares. The reserve encompasses some of Europe's last remaining primeval beech forests, which are part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe UNESCO World Heritage Site. The territory includes a range of altitudinal zones, from foothill to alpine, and features diverse ecosystems such as coniferous and mixed forests, subalpine and alpine meadows, and high-mountain peatlands. It serves as a crucial habitat for numerous rare and endangered species, including large carnivores like the brown bear, lynx, and wolf, as well as the European bison, which has been reintroduced to the area. The reserve is also important for its role in scientific research, environmental monitoring, and the conservation of biological diversity. It functions as a key component in the regional ecological network and contributes to sustainable development in the surrounding communities.
