Sossussflay
Namibia, Sossusflay

Sossussflay is a clay plateau in the territory of the Namib-Nayukluft National Park. It is located in the heart of the Namib desert and covers an area of 50 square meters. km The name comes from two words: sossus, which means “place of water collection” and vley - a shallow lake filled with water in the rainy season. In February, during the rainy season, the plateau is filled with the waters of the Tsohab River. After heavy rains, the water in these small lakes remains for several months, and then it evaporates. Sossussflay is the realm of sand and dry lakes. At this point, the waters of the Tsohab River dry out in anticipation of the rainy season, and the desert is a dried river bed. Sossussflay Plateau is the most visited tourist part of the desert. Sossussflay is called the kingdom of the world's largest sand dunes and one of the driest places on earth. The height of the dunes reaches 240 meters, and the highest dune has a height of 383 meters. Dunes are red due to their high iron content. Some grains of sand are coated with iron oxide, which gives them a characteristic red color. In some places there are two-tone red-yellow dunes. The color of the sand in the Namib desert is not the same: in the southern part of the desert it is yellow-gray, in other areas it is brick red. It looks beautiful in combination with the white salt marshes of the hollow that lie at the base of the dunes. These dunes inspire photographers and artists from around the world. The main vegetation of Sossussflay is camel acacia. Also in Sossussflay is the famous Dead Valley, the so-called Death Valley, with dried camel acacia trees. The skeletons of trees sticking around the lake are preserved for a long time thanks to the dry air of the desert, since there is not enough moisture to decompose. The landscape is simply amazing in its lifelessness. The temperature of the sand in these places reaches 75 degrees. The dead valley was formed about 900 years ago, when sand dunes blocked the access of water to this area. The Namib desert is much older; dinosaurs still walked on it more than 80 million years ago. The best time to visit the desert and plateau of Sossussflay at sunrise or sunset, when the colors are the brightest. For tourists, luxurious hotels, middle-class holiday destinations and numerous campgrounds are offered.
