Haitian revolutionary leader Henri Christophe, after gaining independence from France, declared himself king in 1811 and began to build a military fortress named La Citadelle. It took Christoph nearly 15 years and the help of 20,000 workers to complete his huge mountain fortress, located near the town of Cap Haitina.
The citadel built in its form resembled a sea vessel, its function was to protect the region from another French invasion. The thickness of its walls is 14 meters, the height of the walls reaches 40 meters. But the French no longer bothered the people of Haiti, and the fortress was abandoned. This building is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage and it is called the eighth wonder of the world.
