Dagoba Abhayagiri is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites of Buddhists. In the northern region of the city of Anuradhapura is the most mystical and mysterious "Mountain of Fearlessness" - Abhayagiri. At the top of the mountain, a mysterious monastery (vihara) with the name Dagoba Abhayagiri has been preserved. Initially, here was the center of the monastery, on the territory of which there were many monasteries with bright tiles and bronze roofs. It was a whole monastery city. It occupied an area of 230 hectares and was surrounded by mysterious ponds and massive walls with carved balustrades and moonstones. In this place was the residence of the Northern Monastery, Uttar Vihara. Of all the buildings, the best preserved to date is Dagoba Abhayagiri. The height of the dagoba was originally 115 meters, but currently it is only 75 meters high. The temple was built for the monks expelled for heresy, which was considered a new direction of Buddhism - Mahayana. The monastery received all these monks. On its territory there were cells for monks, a hall for assemblies was built - Sunnypatasala. In the main building there were rooms for classes, a library, rooms for teachers. Young monks also lived here who went through the training process. In those days, the living quarters had hot and cold water and toilets. During excavations, the pool was restored, from which water was distributed throughout the monastery complex. According to legend, the Buddha, having arrived on the island, stepped with one foot on the mountain, and the other on the lands in the northern part of the city of Anuradhapura. And where his footprint remained, a dagoba was built, decorated with gold and silver, with carved balustrades and sparkling moonstones. A huge plate with the footprint of the Buddha is located next to the dagoba. Dagoba Abhayagiri is one of the seven holiest places in the city and the largest of the five main dagobas.
