On January 10, 2001, by a decree of the head of the administration of the Khabarovsk Territory, in order to preserve and restore natural complexes, biological and landscape diversity, improve the protection and reproduction of fish resources and game species of animals, rare and endangered species of animals and plants, preserve their habitats, maintain traditional types of environmental management, development of tourism and recreation in the Anyui River basin, a specially protected natural area of federal significance, the Anyuisky National Park, was organized. The Anyui River basin occupies an area of about 12.7 thousand km2 and is located in the central part of the Khabarovsk Territory in the Nanaisky district. The Anyui basin is home to about 300 species of vertebrates, including about 30 species of fish, 7 species of amphibians, at least 6 species of reptiles, about 200 species of birds (including migratory and wintering ones) and about 50 mammals (including two acclimatizing species - muskrat and American mink). Fish species subject to protection include chum salmon, pink salmon, grayling, lenok, taimen, and carp. Among the rare mammals that live here are the tiger, the Himalayan bear, the red wolf, and the Amur forest cat. In the mouth area of Anyui you can find the Far Eastern turtle. Of the birds, there are more than 20 species listed as rare and endangered: black kite, black grouse, broadmouth, white-tailed eagle, golden eagle, black crane, spiny owl and others. Some of them, such as the great cormorant, osprey, mandarin duck in the Anyui basin are common species.
