Kelso Abbey
Great Britain, Fife

Kelso Abbey today is just a ruin which dates back to 1128. King David I was the founder of this monastery, as well as many others. At first, French monks from Picardy lived here. The abbey was built in the shape of a cross. Kelso appears to have been the largest abbey in the Borders. At one time Abbot Kelso was even a more significant figure than Abbot St. Andrews. Being on the frontier, the abbey often found itself in the heat of war. So in 1545 the abbey was practically wiped off the face of the earth along with its 12 monks.
