Vilsandi National Park is located in Estonia, covers the western coast of Saaremaa, Vilsandi, as well as the Kihelkonna, Kuusnimme and Alta bays with many small islands. The predecessor of the National Park was the Vaikai Nature Reserve, created in 1910, and reorganized in 1993 into the Vilsandi National Park. The park covers an area of 237.6 square kilometers, almost two-thirds of which are the sea with numerous bays and 160 islands. Vilsandi National Park - the area of the Ramsar Convention, the Natura program, as well as the largest protected area of the West Estonian archipelago. Vilsandi island is the only one inhabited in the conservation area, the island itself is small - only 6 km long and 3 km wide, its coastline consists of numerous bays, bays and capes. Vilsandi National Park is best known as a bird sanctuary. 247 species of birds live on its territory, including common eider and Steller's eider, white-tailed eagle, white-breasted geese, stone-eared, swans, ducks, fine-billed guillemots, spotted-nosed tern, golden bee-eater and others. Vilsandi Park is also famous for the largest gray seal rookery in Estonia. Marine fauna is rich and diverse, 80 species of fish are found in the park's water area, many of which are found only in these waters. By the abundance of flora representatives, the Vilsandisky National Park is compared with the botanical garden (114 species of vascular plants, 500 species of mosses and lichens, more than 30 species of orchids), and by the number of cultural and historical monuments - with an open-air museum. The park has preserved traditional slave houses made of thick logs and thatched, barns, old estates. On the island of Vilsandi, you can see the old lighthouse, built in 1809, well preserved to this day. There are also several wooden windmills, which are considered one of the national symbols of Estonia. Interesting tourist routes, boat trips on the sea are organized for visitors to the park, there is the opportunity to go fishing, watch birds and seals. A permanent exhibition introducing the history and nature of the park has been created at the Visitors Center for Vilsandi National Park, and collections of fossils, books and photographs have been collected.
