Rio Blanco National Park
Belize, Toledo District

If you are looking for an adventure in the rainforest, then the Rio Blanco Falls Park in the Toledo area may be what you are looking for. Recognized as a "Local People's Park" in 1992, the park is managed by residents of the surrounding Maya villages of Santa Elena, Santa Cruz, Golden Golden Stream and Pueblo Viejo, called the Maya Rio Blanco Association (RBMA). RBMA members see ecosystem conservation as a top priority for the reserve and believe that the park is a culturally appropriate and economically viable enterprise. The main attraction here is the cascading Rio Blanco waterfalls, which then flow through wide but shallow pools and along smooth mudstone and sandstone, before pouring into a 15-foot ledge into a deep pool. The surrounding limestone boulders allow you to climb to the top of the pool. Further upstream, a small waterfall and a small pool wading through the rocks feed the main waterfall. Trees and flowering vegetation are surrounded by shady cliffs. A smooth stone ledge at the end of the route at the parking lot, covered with a layer of shells, rises about 20 feet above the pool.
