The Dar Jamai Museum is located in the north of Morocco, in the city of Meknes, occupies the building of the palace of the same name, built in 1882 by Mohammed Ben Larbi Jamai, the great vizier of Sultan Moulay Hassan I. However, the vizier did not live long in the palace. Due to his illness, he was forced to leave Meknes and go to Fes for treatment, and after the death of Moulay Hassan I, the Jamai clan fell out of favor, the family’s property was confiscated and sold out. In 1912, the palace housed a French military hospital, in 1916 part of the building was transferred to the Department of Fine Arts, and the rest of it housed administrative offices. In 1920, Dar Jamai came under the control of the Inspectorate of Fine Arts and acquired the status of a museum, originally called the Museum of Moroccan Art. The palace itself Dar Jamai in 1920 was declared a historical monument. The palace was built in the Spanish-Moorish style, its facade is decorated with a gallery with scalloped arches trimmed with mosaic zelig. Terraces in the courtyard, an integral attribute of the Moorish palaces, are paved with tiled tiles. A lush Andalusian garden with gazebos, fountains and sculptural compositions is set on the patio. When decorating the interior of the palace, various decorative techniques were used - marble, mosaic panels, rich wood carvings, structural plaster, openwork friezes and patterned stucco molding. The permanent exhibition of the museum Dar Jamai introduces visitors to the traditional crafts and art of Meknes - wood carvings, paintings, embroidery, jewelry, woodwork, ceramics, metal, leather and textiles. The museum has a large collection of books and manuscripts of the XVII century, a collection of carpets, antique furniture, caftans, decorated with multicolor embroidery. On the ground floor there are luxurious apartments of the great vizier (bedroom, living room and kitchen), recreated in the form in which they were under Mohammed Jamai. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions, educational and training programs for schoolchildren are developed, master classes and drawing lessons are held.
