Koutoubia Mosque
Morocco, Marrakech

Koutoubia Mosque is located in Morocco, in the city of Marrakech, in the southwestern part of the Old Town (medina). The construction of the mosque, which became the main shrine and symbol of the city of Marrakesh, was begun in 1120, during the reign of the Almoravid dynasty, completed in 1196, under Yakub al-Mansur from the Almohad dynasty. Koutoubia Mosque is built of red stone and slate sandstone, which was mined in the quarries of Jebel Geliz. The facade of the building is decorated with openwork arches and decorative ornaments. The minaret, 77 meters high, was built in the form of a tower, which is crowned by a dome with a spire consisting of four copper balls. There is a legend that initially there were only three balls, and they were cast in pure gold. The fourth ball was made later, of the gold jewelry of the wife of Yakub al Mansur, who, in punishment for not observing the fast during Ramadan, gave her jewelry for re-melting and presented a ball of Koutoubia mosque cast from them. The walls of the minaret are decorated with carvings and openwork ornaments, the fourth and fifth levels of the tower are decorated with stepped teeth. The interior of the minaret consists of six rooms, located one above the other. The wide ramp built inside the tower allowed the muezzin to enter the balcony without stepping off his horse. The prayer hall, which can simultaneously accommodate about 20,000 worshipers, has a T-shape. More than 100 columns support the horseshoe-shaped arches located along sixteen side and central naves. Minbar (in Catholic churches - the department) is made of sandalwood and ebony, decorated with inlaid silver and ivory. In the center of the open courtyard, which serves as a place for prayer, there is a fountain for ablutions. Entrance to the Koutoubia mosque is not prohibited for Muslims. Foreign tourists can stroll through the lush garden located next to the mosque, from every corner of which there is a beautiful view of the mosque and the Koutoubia minaret.
