Art Gallery Damgaard
Morocco, Essaouira

The Damgaard Art Gallery is located in Morocco, in the ancient city of Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast. In addition to excellent beaches and medieval architecture, the city is famous for its "free thinking." In Morocco, where centuries-old Muslim traditions dictate strict standards of behavior, the port city of Essaouira in the second half of the 20th century became a mecca for hippies, free artists, musicians and writers. One after another, art galleries opened in the city, exhibitions and music festivals were held. One of the first art galleries was Damgaard Gallery, founded in 1988 by Danish art critic Frederic Damgaard. Damgaard Gallery presents exclusively the work of local self-taught artists. Canvases and sculptures are distinguished by originality, bright colors, a mixture of Arabic, Berber and African artistic styles. Mythological creatures, allegorical scenes, shamanism and esotericism are the main themes of artworks exhibited in the gallery. Gallery staff organize exhibitions of artists, prepare presentations, hold creative meetings. Visitors can purchase their favorite works of art.
