Shanghai Museum
China, Shanghai

The Shanghai Museum is located in the center of Shanghai, next to People's Square. The museum was founded in 1952 and originally occupied the building of the former Club House of the Shanghai Hippodrome. In 1992, for the construction of a new museum building, the City Council allocated a land plot in the city center with an area of 39,200 square meters. The construction of the current building began in August 1993, work was carried out for three years. The museum opened on October 12, 1996. The building has an unusual shape: a square base and a round roof. According to the ancient Chinese vision of the world, a square symbolizes the earth, and a circle - the sky. Three exhibition halls and eleven art galleries feature 120,000 works of ancient Chinese art. In the hall dedicated to bronze products, more than 400 exhibits are stored - musical instruments, weapons, goblets, wine vessels, bronze dishes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, as well as a bronze mirror of the Han dynasty (one of the three surviving to this day). The ceramic collection has more than 500 exhibits. The exhibition shows products of the Neolithic era, tricolor glazed ceramics of the Tang Dynasty, porcelain vases, figurines and services of the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. A separate gallery is dedicated to the products of artisans of national minorities of China. Here visitors can see jewelry, national costumes, sculptures made of bronze and ceramics, bamboo products. The museum has a large collection of jade products. The exposition presents exquisite jewelry, talismans, seals, figures made of stone, which in ancient China was considered a symbol of wealth and power. The Shanghai Museum has galleries dedicated to the art of Chinese painting, sculpture and calligraphy, ancient coins (the collection consists of 7,000 exhibits) and paper money not only in China, but also in neighboring countries. Of great interest to visitors is the furniture exhibition of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Chairs, chests, armchairs, cabinets and other pieces of furniture were made of precious wood, decorated with rich carvings, precious and semiprecious stones, and inlaid with precious metals. The Shanghai Museum hosts temporary and specialized exhibitions, there is a library with a large collection of books and historical documents, a conference room, a bookstore, a tea house and a restaurant.
