The city of Mid-World (Mitad del Mundo) is located in Ecuador, in the city of San Antonio, 26 km north of the center of Quito. In 1736, a French geodesic expedition, led by renowned astronomer and surveyor Charles Marie de la Condamine, arrived in Ecuador to take measurements of the earth's surface and determine the equator line. In 1936, in honor of the 200th anniversary of the geodetic expedition of the French Academy of Sciences, a monument to the Equator was erected on the line dividing the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. For its construction, the town of San Antonio was chosen in the parish of Pichincha. Modern GPS studies show that in fact the equator passes 240 meters north of the specified line. The error in the calculations of French scientists, given the possibilities of that time, was minimal. In 1979, the first monument was replaced with a 30-meter high monument, crowned with a globe. The monument became the center of the tourist town of Mitad del Mundo, on the territory of which the Ethnographic Museum, exhibition pavilions with expositions dedicated to the first and second French geodetic expeditions (French Pavilion), the colonial period of Ecuador (Colonial Pavilion of Quito), the work of the artist Osvaldo Guayasamina (Spanish Pavilion) are located , planetarium, halls for cultural events, souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes. 200 meters from the Ethnographic Museum, on the line of the "true" equator is the Intignan Museum (Museum of the Sun). Here visitors will be shown an experiment with a raw egg standing on a hat of a nail driven into the equator line, they will offer to compare their watches in the sun (at the equator it rises at 6 a.m. and sets at exactly 6 p.m.), observe changes in water rotation on both sides equator. One of the most favorite tourist attractions is to take a picture while standing with one foot in the South and the other in the Northern Hemisphere of the Globe. The city of Mid-World is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of Ecuador, thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Mitad del Mundo to visit the very center of the Earth.
