Phnom Bakheng Temple
Cambodia, Siem Reap Province

Phnom Bakheng was built about two centuries before Angkor Wat. This is a Hindu temple-mountain dedicated to Shiva. Historians suggest that at one time Bakheng was the main temple in the Angkor area. King Yasovarman, who moved the capital from Roluos (Hariharalaya) to the Angkor region, had Phnom Bakheng built at the center of his new city.
The temple, located on the top of a hill, is the most popular tourist spot for watching the sunset. From here, in the last rays of the sun, a stunning panorama of Angkor Wat opens up, spread out below, about one and a half kilometers from Bakheng.
