Historic Centre of Bridgetown and its Garrison
Barbados, Bridgetown

The Historic Centre of Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its outstanding representation of British colonial architecture in the Caribbean and its role as a major port in the Atlantic trade. Bridgetown's original street layout, established in the 17th century, is a rare example of a medieval English urban plan adapted to a colonial setting outside of Europe. The Garrison area is one of the most complete and well-preserved British military complexes of the 18th and 19th centuries in the world. It served as the headquarters for the British Windward Islands command. The site includes historic buildings such as the Main Guard, military prisons, and artillery batteries. The Careenage, a natural inlet in the heart of Bridgetown, functioned as the city's original harbor and was crucial for the maintenance and repair of ships. The area's development is directly linked to the expansion of the sugar and slave trades, which shaped the socio-economic history of the Caribbean. The site's architectural ensemble and urban structure bear exceptional testimony to the spread of colonial society and administration.
