One Pillar Pagoda
Vietnam, Ha Noi municipality

The famous Hanoi Pagoda on one pillar (Chua Mot Kot) was built by King Lee Thai Tong, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. According to the chronicles, the emperor, who had no heirs, dreamed that he met with Kuan Tae Am Bo Tat (the Goddess of mercy), who, sitting on a lotus flower, passed him a baby boy. Lee Thai Tong subsequently married a young peasant girl who had given birth to an heir by chance. To express his gratitude to the gods, he built in 1049 a Pagoda on one pillar. The pagoda is built of wood, mounted on a stone column with a diameter of 1.25 meters, its appearance resembles a lotus flower - a symbol of purity and chastity. In 1954, the pagoda was destroyed by the French, restored after Vietnam gained independence. It is located near the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh City.
