Kgalagadi Cross-border Park
Botswana, Kalakhari

Kgalagadi Cross-border Park is located in two countries - Botswana and South Africa. In Botswana, this is the territory in the south-west of the country, previously - Gemsbok National Park. In 2000, the environmental zones of both countries, separated by the state border, were combined into one park, whose total area was 38,000 square kilometers (3/4 of the park’s territory is located in Botswana). The Kgalagadi Cross-border Park is located in the south of the Kalahari Desert; its natural formations are represented by zones of acacia savannas, sand deserts and semi-deserts. Two rivers flow through the territory of the park - Ayub and Nossob, however, in the dry season, their beds dry up and the water "goes" deep underground. In the summer (October to April), the air temperature in Kgalagadi rises above 40 ° C, at which time severe thunderstorms and storms are not rare. In winter, from June to August, the temperature is usually 25 ° C, the air is clean and fresh, and the nights are pretty cool. The main landscape of the Kgalagadi park is the huge dunes of red sand and salt marshes. The plant world is represented mainly by thorny shrubs; during the rainy season, sections along the rivers are covered for a short time by flowering forbs. The fauna of the park is quite diverse, here you can find herds of Gemsbok, Kanna and Wildebeest antelopes, gazelles, kudu and giraffes. Kgalagadi is inhabited by lions, cheetahs, leopards, caracal, spotted hyena, African wild dog, jackals, vervet, ferrets, porcupines, warthogs, marsupials and other rodents. About 280 species of birds are registered in the park, including a black snake-eater, a war eagle, a white-backed and an African eared vulture, a secretary bird, a large kestrel, turumti, a pale owl, bustards, larks, bulbul, an African marsh warbler, big sparrow, swallows and others. In the park, in Botswana, there are three main tourist areas - Two Rivers, Wilderness Trail and Mabuasehube. Tourists who entered Kgalagadi from the direction of Botswana can freely travel through the South African part of the park, without additional formalities at the border and surcharges. Campsites and campgrounds are equipped for visitors in the park, reservation of which is mandatory. Tourists can make an independent trip through the park, or accompanied by guides, movement in the park is possible only on SUVs and after sunset it is strictly prohibited.
