Hundertwasser House
Austria, Vienna

The Hundertwasser House is a residential building complex in Vienna, completed in 1985. It was designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, with the architectural collaboration of Josef Krawina and later Peter Pelikan. The building is renowned for its unconventional and organic design, which stands in stark contrast to traditional architectural styles. It was commissioned by the City of Vienna as a model project for a more humane and natural living environment in an urban setting. The structure incorporates numerous trees and shrubs, with vegetation growing from the roofs and terraces, earning it the description of a "house for people and trees." The facade is characterized by its uneven, undulating floors, a lack of straight lines, and a vibrant color palette. The complex contains 52 apartments, four offices, 16 private terraces, and three communal terraces, providing a unique living experience. It has become a significant landmark and a popular tourist attraction, though the interior is not open to the public as it is private residential property. The building embodies Hundertwasser's philosophical and ecological principles, including his rejection of standardized architecture and his advocacy for a harmonious relationship between human habitation and nature.
