The Barcelona Zoo is located almost in the very center of the city, not far from the Arc de Triomphe. You can get to it by metro. It is best to start a trip to the zoo from the side of the Arc de Triomphe, walking along the boulevard with beautiful castles in the Gothic style, in which the municipal authorities of the Catalan autonomy are located. Here, in the garden - the building of the Zoological Museum.
In terms of size, the Barcelona Zoo is a single territory. If you look at the Barcelona Zoo from a bird's eye view, its shape will look like something like a curved cucumber, or rather, even an elongated pear. Just in the center of the bend, two entrances are located opposite each other: one from the side of the Arc de Triomphe, the other, located opposite, from the side of the Olympic Village. Near this entrance there is a souvenir shop where you can buy various souvenirs with the symbols of the zoo or images of its inhabitants.
The Barcelona Zoo presents animals from almost all climatic zones. All of them get along well in the Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by mild winters and hot summers. All enclosures are arranged in such a way that nothing interferes with observing animals. Visitors and inhabitants of the zoo are separated by low fences and ditches filled with water, or organic glass ceilings, if we are talking about enclosed spaces.
If, entering the zoo from the side of the Arc de Triomphe, immediately turn left and continue along the route in this direction, then in the central part of the park, that is, on the right hand, there will be an enclosure with pygmy hippos. They are open for review from both sides, that is, moving in the chosen direction and making a semicircle, they can be seen again. In the same part as the hippos, but just at the turn of the route, in a long enclosure divided into squares, wild cat cubs live - kittens of a cheetah, tiger, panther and other representatives of this family.
In the dead end of the zoo, live large parrots, mostly of Hispanic origin. The front and top of their habitats are covered with a net. But its holes, apparently, are so large that sparrows constantly climb into the aviary through them and drag their food from the parrots.
Three lions - a male and two females - live in an open-air cage fenced with a large moat. Next - a small paddock with nutria, which is like a large concrete barrel with a sloping bottom, part of which is filled with water.
Only a low fence separates the visitors from the llamas, who fit in a fairly large number in a small corral near the second entrance to the zoo. The height of the fence is such that even kids can pick leaves from nearby trees and feed them to animals.
On the right side of the zoo, also near the second entrance to the park, there is a monkey house. Smaller primates, such as marmosets, are kept in closed cages with Plexiglas fronts. Large apes, such as chimpanzees, live in open enclosures.
Opposite the monkey house in the central part of the zoo there is an enclosure with Madagascar lemurs. They were settled on a small concrete island, around which everything is flooded with water. These little animals are afraid of her more than anything in the world, which is sometimes used by savvy visitors. If you splash a little water, it frightens the lemurs: they sit on their backs, spreading their arms and rolling their eyes. In this position, they are usually photographed. Wooden barrels are arranged on the island for lemurs, which replace hollows, and instead of tropical lianas, ropes are stretched.
Next to the monkey house is a bear's corner. On one side, the bear enclosure has several rises in the form of wide steps.
A little further away live chinstrap penguins, and next to them - fur seals.
There is also a covered pavilion with small birds: hummingbirds, toucans and others. In the central part of the park there is a paddock with African ungulates: okapi, giraffes, etc. Opposite the ungulates are African elephants.
Not far from the elephants, large hippos live in a huge pool. True, they spend most of the time in the water, from which only the nose, eyes, ears and back stick out. The exhibition of giants is continued by large turtles, which are not immediately distinguishable from stones.
Australian animals are represented by kangaroos and emus, which are kept in the same enclosure.
In addition, the zoo has a terrarium and a pool where shows are shown with various marine animals - dolphins, seals and others.
