Museum Creole House Eureka
Mauritius, Moka Town

The Eureka Creole House Museum is located in the western part of the island of Mauritius, on the outskirts of the town of Moka, 10 km from the city of Port Louis. The mansion in the English colonial style is one of the largest and best preserved houses on the island of the XIX century. The estate was built in 1830 by the English entrepreneur Carr, who wished to live as close as possible to the governor's residence Le Réduit. In 1856, the estate was bought by the French aristocrat Eugene Le Clesio. The plantation was planted with sugar cane, the Eureka sugar factory was built, and soon sugar production began to bring fabulous profits for those times. The family of Le Clesio settled in a luxurious mansion, which by the name of the plant also began to be called Eureka. The house is located at the foot of a hill, surrounded by a large tropical garden. The territory of the park is limited on one side by the mountain river Moka, which flows from the Moka Mountains along the bottom of a deep ravine. Along the river bank there is a path for walks leading to four small waterfalls, in the jets of which you can swim. In the lush garden grow azaleas, camellias, orchids, ferns, palm trees, mangoes and many endemic plant species in Mauritius. Eureka’s Creole mansion is called the “House of 109 Doors and Windows”, the facade of the building is surrounded by a spacious white porch painted in white. Seven generations of the Le Clezio family lived in this house, among the representatives of the family were artists, poets, writers, doctors, bankers and entrepreneurs. The writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2008, is a descendant of the Le Clécio clan from the Eureka estate in Mauritius. In 1984, the estate was sold to Jacques de Maroussem, who created a museum of colonial life and a small restaurant of Creole cuisine. Museum visitors can walk through the rooms of the mansion, preserving the atmosphere of the 19th century, visit the dining room, music room, study, bedroom, bathroom with a bathtub carved from a single piece of marble. The museum presents antique carved furniture made of rosewood, ebony and mahogany, antique porcelain, photographs, paintings, portraits of members of the Le Clesio family, books. The museum's restaurant serves traditional dishes prepared according to old recipes. At the gift shop you can buy locally made tea, spices, scented candles and exotic jewelry.
