St. Boris and Gleb Kolozh Church
Belarus, Grodno

The St. Boris and Gleb Kolozh Church is a monument of ancient Rus' architecture from the 12th century. It is one of the oldest surviving churches in Belarus and a rare example of the Grodno architectural school. The church is distinguished by its unique construction technique, which includes the use of polychrome facings made of majolica tiles and polished stones set into the brickwork, creating decorative patterns on the exterior walls. It was built on the high bank of the Neman River. The structure has suffered from landslides over the centuries due to its vulnerable location, leading to the partial collapse of its southern and apsidal walls in the 19th century. Despite these damages, the main part of the building has been preserved. The church's interior originally featured frescoes, though only fragments remain today. It is renowned for its acoustic properties, achieved through embedded clay vessels, known as golosniki, in the walls. The church is dedicated to the first Russian saints, Boris and Gleb. Its architectural design and construction methods represent a significant and distinctive contribution to the cultural heritage of the region.
