Interpretation Center The Union Nature Trail is located in the northwest of St. Lucia, a 10-minute drive from Castries. In 1960, as part of the development of eco-tourism on the island of Saint Lucia, the Department of Forestry Agricultural Research Station was transformed into an Interpretation Center, which provides visitors with information on the island’s forest ecosystems, species composition of flora and fauna, as well as threatened disappearances to representatives of Flora and Fauna. The Center is equipped with the Union nature trail, 1.6 km long, passing through the territory of the secondary dry tropical forest. During the walk, visitors get acquainted with plant species characteristic of this type of forest ecosystem, including endemic ones, have the opportunity to see birds living in the forest - hummingbirds, finches, warblers, mockingbirds. The trail passes through the Garden of Medicinal Plants, in which dozens of species of medicinal herbs grow. Their rhizomes, leaves, flowers and seeds are used in traditional medicine for the preparation of tinctures, balms, syrups, herbal teas and elixirs. The Center’s mini-zoo features endemic islands - the iguana of Saint Lucia, a boa constrictor boa, the Saint Lucia parrot, as well as agouti, green monkey, blue-and-yellow macaw, land coal turtle, and red-eared fresh-water turtle. The center has developed educational programs for students, guided tours, lectures are given.
