Karaim Kenassa
Russia, Simferopol

The Karaim Kenassa in Simferopol is a prayer house of the Crimean Karaites, a distinctive ethnic and religious group. The Karaites are a Jewish movement characterized by their reliance on the Tanakh as the sole source of divine law, rejecting the later rabbinic interpretations found in the Oral Torah. This community has a long and significant history in Crimea. The construction of the kenassa was completed in 1896, financed by the local Karaim community. The building served as the central spiritual and cultural hub for the Karaites of Simferopol and the surrounding Taurida Governorate. Following the establishment of Soviet power, the kenassa, like many other religious institutions, was closed in the 1930s. Its premises were repurposed for secular use, housing various state organizations over the decades. With the changes in religious policy in the late 20th century, efforts began to restore the building and return it to the Karaim community. The kenassa is recognized as an object of cultural heritage, representing the unique architectural and historical legacy of the Crimean Karaites.
