Kyrk-Aziz Cave Sanctuary
Russia, Litvinenkovo

The Kyrk-Aziz Cave Sanctuary is a historical and archaeological monument located in the village of Litvinenkovo in the Belogorsky District. This site represents a medieval cave complex carved into a rocky outcrop, which served as a Christian monastic center. The sanctuary is believed to have been active during the period of the Principality of Theodoro, a Byzantine successor state that existed in the southwestern part of Crimea until the late 15th century. The complex includes several chambers, including a church with an apse, living quarters for monks, and various utility rooms, all interconnected by passages. Architectural elements such as niches, altars, and traces of frescoes indicate its religious purpose. The site's strategic location on a hill provided natural defense and a vantage point over the surrounding area. It forms part of a broader network of cave monasteries in the Crimean Mountains, reflecting the spread of Orthodox Christianity and monastic life in the region during the Middle Ages. The sanctuary is a protected cultural heritage site, offering insight into the historical and spiritual landscape of medieval Crimea.
