Tsar's Kurgan
Russia, Kerch

The Tsar's Kurgan is a prominent burial mound located on the outskirts of Kerch. It represents a significant monument of funerary architecture from the period of the Bosporan Kingdom, dating to the 4th century BC. The kurgan is renowned for its unique and well-preserved stone construction, which includes a long, corbelled dromos (passageway) leading to a square burial chamber. This architectural design, characterized by its false vault, is a masterpiece of ancient engineering. The structure was intended as a final resting place for a high-ranking Bosporan ruler, though the central chamber was found looted in antiquity. The monument stands as a testament to the cultural and economic interactions between the Greek colonists and local Scythian populations in the region. Its historical and architectural significance makes it a key site for understanding the Hellenistic influence in the northern Black Sea area. The site is accessible to the public and is part of the Kerch Historical and Cultural Preserve.
