Church of John the Baptist
Russia, Kerch

The Church of John the Baptist in Kerch is one of the oldest Christian churches in Eastern Europe. Its construction dates to a period between the 8th and 11th centuries, with the earliest core believed to have been built in the 8th or 9th century, during the time of the Byzantine Empire's influence in the region. The church exhibits a cross-in-square architectural plan, characteristic of Byzantine church architecture, and features a distinctive blend of construction techniques, including the use of alternating layers of white stone and red brick. This method is a hallmark of Byzantine provincial architecture from that era. Throughout its long history, the church has undergone several modifications and restorations. It has functioned continuously as a place of Christian worship, with brief interruptions, and is under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The building is recognized as a monument of architecture of national significance and is protected by the state. Its historical and architectural value lies in its antiquity and its role as a physical testament to the early spread of Christianity in the Crimean peninsula.
