Diorama of the Assault on Sapun Mountain, May 7, 1944
Russia, Sevastopol

The Diorama of the Assault on Sapun Mountain, May 7, 1944, is a large-scale artistic and historical composition dedicated to the decisive battle for the liberation of Sevastopol during the Great Patriotic War. The assault on Sapun Mountain was a critical operation of the Crimean Offensive, carried out by forces of the 4th Ukrainian Front and the Black Sea Fleet against heavily fortified German defensive positions. The successful capture of this key height on May 7, 1944, allowed Soviet troops to break through the main defensive line and led to the complete liberation of the city two days later. The diorama building is located on the historic site of the battle itself, forming part of the Sapun Mountain Memorial Complex. The artistic work depicts the culminating moment of the assault, created by a group of military artists from the M.B. Grekov Studio. It is one of the largest dioramas of its kind, renowned for its detailed realism and the immersive effect created by the combination of a large painted canvas with a three-dimensional foreground, seamlessly merging to create a single panoramic scene. The memorial complex surrounding the diorama includes an open-air exhibition of military equipment from the war period and permanent commemorative structures honoring the soldiers who fought in the battle.
