The Adzhimushkay quarries of Kerch are one of the most dramatic monuments of the Great Patriotic War. In pre-war times, limestone was mined in Adzhimushkay, as a result of which numerous catacombs were formed in these places. During the Great Patriotic War, the catacombs became the location of part of the troops of the Crimean Front defending Kerch. From the second half of May until the end of October 1942, a heroic defense was waged in the Adzhimushkay quarries against units of the German army, more than 10 thousand Soviet soldiers covering the withdrawal and crossing of the Crimean Front troops to the Taman Peninsula. The Adzhimushkay quarries are an unprecedented feat of Soviet soldiers during the Great Patriotic War.
