Bakhchisaray Holy Dormition Men's Monastery
Russia, Bakhchisaray

The Bakhchisaray Holy Dormition Men's Monastery is a historically significant Orthodox monastic community. It is situated in a picturesque rock formation known as the Maryam-Dere ravine. The monastery's origins are traditionally dated to the late 8th or early 9th century, linking it to the period of Iconoclasm in the Byzantine Empire, when monks are believed to have fled to Crimea. For centuries, it served as a major center of Orthodox Christianity in the region, even during the rule of the Crimean Khanate, which afforded it a degree of protection. The monastery complex is renowned for its main cave church, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is carved directly into the face of a cliff. The site experienced periods of decline and revival throughout its long history. It was officially re-established as a monastic community in 1993. The monastery is a prominent pilgrimage site, housing several revered icons and a holy spring. Its architectural ensemble harmoniously integrates with the natural landscape, featuring caves, staircases, and buildings constructed on various levels of the rocky slope.
