Alhaferia Castle is located in the heart of the city of Zaragoza. : a sumptuous Moorish palace built by order of Arab rulers in the early 11th century, is a living testament to the power of the Arab world in the Middle Ages. This is the only fully preserved Islamic castle in Spain.
The exterior severity of the palace hides luxurious interior interiors. Entering the main gate, we find ourselves in the small courtyard of St. Isabella. From it, the road leads to openwork galleries, the premises of the main palace building, as well as to the old chapel Oratorios (now it does not work, and the parliamentary library is located on its squares). The tallest castle structure is the Troubadour Tower. It is a classic prism tower with a single entrance at a height of 3-4 floors, the initial task of which was to protect the inhabitants of the castle during a siege.
The interior of the castle is decorated with expensive marble and alabaster decor. The throne room is made in the style of Moorish Mudejar architecture. The hallmark of the hall is a carved wood ceiling and a gilded ornament. However, the Arabian decoration was not preserved in all rooms - Catholics built a small palace in their style over the main residence of the Arabs. A large Gothic staircase with alabaster carved railings, a colonnade with Gothic ornaments, stucco molding and other elements give out the classic “European style” of architecture.
In the courtyard of the castle is an alpine garden framed in Moorish arches.
Today in the palace is Cortes (regional parliament) of Aragon.
