Museum of Traditional Hand-Weaving Lakeland
Belarus, Polock

The exposition of the museum, which opened its doors to visitors in December 1998, tells about the features of manual weaving in Lakes (Gluboksky, Miorsky, Sharkovshchinsky, Verkhnedvinsky, Postavy, Dokshitsky and Polotsky districts of the Vitebsk region), the history and traditions of this craft. In Belarus, weaving has been known since ancient times, as evidenced by archaeological finds (spindle, prints of fabric on ceramic vessels, archaic tools). This is the most common and ancient type of folk arts and crafts, directly related to the manufacture of clothing and household items: bedspreads, tablecloths, towels, etc. The museum exposition is housed in three rooms and illuminates the traditional process of creating woven items from the late XIX - early XX centuries, from planting flax to the final product.
The model of the weaving craft itself is represented by a world tree whose motif is found in the decor of woven and embroidered products and symbolizes the eternity and infinity of life, acting as a link between the world and man. The roots of the World Tree tell about the secrets of growing and initial processing of flax, the trunk - about the creation of fabric and its existence in human life, the crown - about the mysterious world of mythological symbols and meanings, which are encrypted by our ancestors in numerous ornaments that adorn almost every homespun thing. The ability to see and try to read multi-colored encoded messages on towels, festive clothes, bedspreads that are exhibited in the museum, involves visitors in the unique heritage of Belarusian traditional culture. If bread is the head of everything, then flax is the soul of everything. This is a special plant that can feed, cure and warm the body and soul.
