Monastery of Saints Clement and Panteleimon
Macedonia, Ohrid (city)

In 2000, Ohrid's city authorities made a grandiose decision: to rebuild the destroyed Plaoshnik quarter in the “old” form, as in the time of St. Clement. First of all, the church of St. Panteleimon was built. During the construction of the church fundamentally not used modern technology. It was believed that the use of technological advances would harm the spirituality of the temple, so all construction was done manually, like many centuries ago.
It is believed that St. Clement arrived in Ohrid in 893. The main church of the city was allocated to him. It was located on the site of the early Christian basilica. Clement considered the existing church too small for his educational mission, so he ordered the construction of a new, large church on Plaoshnik and dedicate it in the name of St. Panteleimon. Due to the educational activities of St. Clement, the monastery of St. Panteleimon is often called the first Slavic university, which included the oldest medical school in Europe. Within the walls of the monastery, the monks taught a new alphabet - the verb. After the conquest of Ohrid by the Ottoman Turks, the monastery was turned into a mosque. Over time, the Turks returned many mosques to the use of the church, so it was with the monastery of St. Panteleimon. The monastery was destroyed in the 17th century for the construction of a new mosque.
Archaeological excavations are underway at Plaoshnik. From the very beginning - in 2000, historians managed to unearth the ruins of an early Christian basilica and baptistery. If archaeological work continues according to plan, then over the next few years several more buildings in the spirit of medieval Byzantine architecture should appear on Plaoshnik. Excavations at Plaoshnik justified themselves: literally once a year, an important discovery is made here. The most unexpected discovery was made in 2007, when archaeologists found a huge treasure of Venetian coins. This find confirms the existence of trade relations with the Republic of Venice.
